NORTON — The Robert Neal Gallery, located at 3120 Wadsworth Road, carries a wide array of gift ideas, antiques and restored furniture in one location.
The two-story, 4,000-square foot shop opened in April in the former location of Diane’s Thrift Shop, which closed in 2021.
“What I usually tell people is, you will love shopping here,” said co-owner Robert Neal Daugherty. “[Customers] like the selection of skin-care items, soaps and handbags but they also start looking around and say ‘oh my, look what they did with this furniture’.”
Daugherty is the former owner of Glass Music in Coshocton, which he said had the designation of being the oldest operating music store in Ohio, and the former owner of an antique store in Gatlinburg, Tenn. He added that he has been in the retail business since 1984 and has a penchant for refinishing furniture that goes back even further.
“I’ve been refinishing furniture since I was a teenager, back into the 1970s,” Daugherty said. “And I’ve been in jewelry for a long time.”
He said his and co-owner Ken Herdt’s idea for Robert Neal Gallery was to bring Daugherty’s passion for restored furniture, antiques and jewelry “under one roof” with items such as vintage tools, skincare, handbags, candles and collectibles.
Daugherty said Robert Neal Gallery also includes items from a variety of vendors such as Barberton-based Rachel’s Trash To Treasure, which provides kitchen restoration services such as kitchen cabinet and countertop rehabs.
Daugherty said a Robert Neal Gallery website is in the works, along with plans for classes on how to repurpose furniture and more ambitious endeavors.
“One of the ‘growth’ things we are thinking of doing, with a park right across the street from us, is having a flea market outside for a weekend,” Daugherty said. “We would check with our neighbors, and as long as the city allowed it, I think it could be big and help all the businesses around here.”
Store hours at Robert Neal Gallery are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. and Tuesday by appointment only.
